"They lost it": Margot Robbie's surprise encounter with Barbie fans

Margot Robbie has recalled a sweet story about when she overheard a group of men talking about the Barbie movie, before giving them the surprise of their life.

At a screening of the Barbie movie in Los Angeles, the Aussie actress told the audience of the heartwarming moment she encountered in Scotland, shortly after the film's release last July.

At the SAG-AFTRA screening of the blockbuster movie, Robbie began, “I had this brilliant experience.”

“I was in a pub in the middle of nowhere in Scotland and I listened for about 30 minutes to a group of guys on a bachelor party discussing the Barbie movie, not knowing that I was sitting two or three feet away from them.”

Robbie continued, “It was just truly fascinating. There were people at the table who refused to see the Barbie movie."

“One guy was like, ‘Dude, it is a cultural moment, don’t you want to be a part of culture?’ And the other guy was like, ‘I’ll never see it,’ and by the end he did want to see it. It was a whole thing."

“I wasn’t going to go up to them, but then I did.”

Before leaving the pub, Robbie casually waltzed up to the group of men who “lost it” when they discovered Barbie herself had overheard their conversation.

“At the last minute as I was walking out I went to their table and I went ‘Thank you for seeing the Barbie movie’,” she added.

“It was very funny, they lost it. It took a full minute for them to realise and I was practically out the door and they went ‘Ohhhh’.

“People’s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience.”

The heartwarming story comes fresh on the heels of Margot being snubbed for a Best Actress nomination at this year's Oscars for the Barbie movie, which caused an uproar on social media.

Margot addressed the snub at the LA screening, saying there's “no way to feel sad when you’re this blessed.”

“Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director,” she added.

“What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is."

“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamt it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

Margot Robbie snubbed as Oscar nominations announced

The nominations for the 96th academy awards has been announced, and despite Barbie being nominated for eight awards, there were a few notable snubs that fans aren't happy about.

The film’s star, Margot Robbie, was not nominated for best actress, despite co-star Ryan Gosling receiving a nomination for best supporting actor for his role as Ken.

The film's director Greta Gerwig, was also snubbed as she was not nominated for best director.

Fans took to social media to express their thoughts, with many of them unhappy with the academy's choice.

"So Ryan Gosling’s nominated for playing ken but Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for playing barbie… in barbie," one person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

So Ryan Gosling’s nominated for playing ken but Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for playing barbie… in barbie #Oscars

pic.twitter.com/uceB20BB8H

— poppy ☾ (@scddevereaux) January 23, 2024

"No nomination for Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig for the #Oscars but Ryan Gosling gets one. But no Best Director nom?!" another tweeted.

One particular tweet went viral, with over 109 thousand likes.

"Ken getting nominated and not Barbie is honestly so fitting for a film about a man discovering the power of patriarchy in the Real World," the tweet read.

Ken getting nominated and not Barbie is honestly so fitting for a film about a man discovering the power of patriarchy in the Real World.

— Michael. Margot Robbie's enormous Barbie salary revealed

Margot Robbie is set to take home her biggest pay cheque yet for her portrayal in the Barbie movie, as the highly-anticipated film hits the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Robbie, who started her acting career on Neighbours, both starred in and produced the Barbie film, which was directed by Greta Gerwig.

According to reports from Variety, the 32-year-old Aussie actress made an upfront fee of $19 million to portray the Mattel doll, but that figure will make a significant jump after the lucrative sales, bringing Margot's salary to $77 million.

Barbie, which was made on a budget of approximately $220 million, hit the coveted $US1 billion mark at the global box office earlier this month, just two weeks after it hit cinemas.

Robbie was instrumental in the making of the Barbie film, as her production company, LuckyChap, purchased the rights from Mattel in 2018.

She then pitched the film to Warner Bros. and managed to convince Gerwig to both write and direct the blockbuster movie, with Gerwig's partner Noah Baumbach jumping in to help write the screenplay.

Speaking of her commitment to making Barbie happen, Robbie recently said she was “overselling” the project in early meetings with executives to get the project off the ground.

“I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie said in an interview with Collider in July.

She added, “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’ – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years.

“And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, OK?”

The husband of a woman who died in a buggy crash during their honeymoon has been charged in relation to her death.

Marina Hanna and Robbie Awad were wed on June 11, 2022, before heading to Queensland’s Hamilton Island for their honeymoon two days later.

On June 20, a ride in a golf buggy went horribly wrong, with the 29-year-old bride suffering critical injuries after the electric vehicle flipped over.

Initial reports claimed the buggy had started to run out of the battery and Mr Awad, who was driving, made a U-turn to drive back and charge it when it flipped over.

Ms Hanna was allegedly not wearing her seat belt, and fell out of the vehicle, dying at the scene.

While police initially said the incident was nothing more than “a tragic accident”, an extensive police investigation has resulted in several charges laid against Mr Awad, including driving without due care and attention, seatbelt offences, and using a mobile phone while driving.

The 30-year-old is due to face the Proserpine Magistrates Court on December 5.

He reportedly presented to Queensland Police last week, per the Daily Mail, after he was asked to hand himself in.

In the wake of her death, Mr Awad took to social media to share his heartbreak, writing that his heart was broken and his world shattered after losing “the most beautiful girl in the world”.

During an interview in July, he said his wife had “never looked so beautiful” as they boarded a helicopter to fly over the island the day before the accident.

“She was radiating before she left [this life]. 'It was because God was calling her home,” he said.

“She is an angel.

“There are no two ways about it.”

Clips shared on Instagram show the couple walking across the tarmac to board their Qantas flight to Queensland at the start of their trip, as well as the interior of their plush resort upon their arrival.

Another, posted before Ms Hanna’s death, showed Mr Awad driving the buggy to their resort while she filmed the scenery from the passenger seat.

After her passing, Mr Awad started a non-for-profit organisation in Ms Hanna’s name to “spread love, joy and kindness to the world” like she did.

“The foundation will hold two major events every year, each year going forward,” he said.

“The first will be a charity ball, the second will be a family fun day, as Marina held family close to her heart always.”

Image: Instagram

Robbie Williams’ secret health battle: “I didn’t leave the house for three years"

On Sunday evening, Robbie Williams performed to thousands of adoring fans – something he thought he might not ever get the opportunity to do again, he admitted.

The British superstar opened up about his health battle with agoraphobia, admitting it left him unable to get off the sofa for three years from 2006 until 2009.

Williams told The Sun he was sofa-ridden and couldn’t leave his home or continue to perform or work because his mind told him he “shouldn’t go anywhere".

“My career had gone stratospheric and taken me to Mars, and I needed some time to get my equilibrium back and get myself back together,” the singer candidly revealed.

“It was my body and mind telling me I shouldn’t go anywhere, that I couldn’t do anything. It was telling me to just wait — so I literally just sat and waited.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Robbie Williams (@robbiewilliams) on May 3, 2019 at 7:46am PDT

“I was agoraphobic from around 2006 to 2009. Those years were just spent wearing a cashmere kaftan, eating Kettle Chips, growing a beard and staying in.

“I remember they offered me £15 million ($A26 million) to take over from Simon Cowell on American Idol, plus a big gig in the States, but I turned it down because I wasn’t leaving the sofa at the time. I just couldn’t.”

Agoraphobia is a type of anxiety disorder where an individual can fear and avoid places or situations that might cause them to panic and make them feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed.

Thankfully, the singer decided to get the help he needed when he heard the song Human by fellow musicians The Killers on the radio.

“I remember listening to that Killers song and something in that moment made me think, ‘I had better get my a**e in gear, put an album together and tour’.

Robbie eventually made a comeback on The X Factor in 2009 where he performed his song Bodies.

However the the appearance did not go as smoothly as planned when the sliding stage doors got stuck and a critic slammed Robbie's "wide-eyed, unblinking and sweaty" rendition was a sign he "wasn't the superstar he used to be."

“There was no rhyme or reason why five minutes before that, it hadn’t happened. But when I did come back, it felt so unnatural. It’s why that Bodies performance was so bad — I didn’t know what the f*** I was doing, it didn’t seem natural to me any more.

“I had to re-learn how to entertain. It wasn’t an easy process — it was like having a car crash and then learning how to walk again.

The British star eventually re-joined the Take That tour in 2011, which broke all previous records for ticket sales, and extra dates were added to adhere to demands.

“If it wasn’t for Take That, and re-joining them, I don’t know if I’d have come back at all.”

He added, “Initially, I got to hide in plain sight – I could hide behind my boys. They helped an awful lot.”
